Author, ad guru Ambi Parameswaran on why negotiation can be enjoyable
Amazon’s annual two-day shopping event for Prime members, Prime Day is just around the corner, and its good news for book-lovers! A host of new releases are planned for Prime Day, with authors bringing you different slices of life, from essays to commentaries and fiction to fantasy.
Ambi Parameswaran, best-selling author of 10 books, is an ad guru, brand strategist and founder of brand-building.com. His mini-book ‘Negotiation Magic’ will teach young readers the essence of negotiation, a key life skill. The book is lined up for Prime Day, and is filled with anecdotes that demonstrate how to plan, prepare and go through a fulfilling negotiation process.
'Negotiation can produce magical outcomes'
Ambi was introduced to the topic of negotiation when he attended the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Inspired by the program’s Prof. Max Bazerman, who is among the most knowledgeable gurus on negotiation, he then read several books and articles and shared his new found learning in some of his brand coaching engagements. Asked why he wrote this book, he says, “To succeed in any sphere in life you need to have the ability to negotiate. I realised that there is no book that captures the essence of negotiation in an approachable form for young readers. I wrote the mini-book ‘Negotiation Magic’ to bring out the truth that negotiation can be enjoyable and when done well, it can produce magical outcomes, for everyone around.”
The launch of his book is not the only thing Ambi is looking forward to Prime Day for. He loves technology gadgets and bought himself an Apple Watch recently. He’s now thinking about a large screen for his laptop, something he may indulge in this Amazon Prime Day.
Writing during the pandemic
Writing during the pandemic had its challenges, but also saw his discipline as a writer grow. “I have a discipline of writing for two hours every week, without fail. During the pandemic this frequency increased. Earlier, I used meetings to pick people’s brains, which is something I miss severely. I also used to travel a lot across India and abroad. Each trip taught me new things and gave me ideas for new articles. I have missed that desperately.”
An avid reader, Ambi reads a multitude of books across a variety of topics. The pandemic gave him and many others the chance to catch up on their reading. “I am happy that the pandemic and associated lockdowns has increased the time spent on reading. It is good to know that Indians are using the ‘extra time’ in not just watching mindless videos. It has been reported that the lockdown has stirred interest in not just the bestsellers but also a variety of other books. So if Indian book lovers are both going horizontal and vertical - reading a multitude of topics vs depth of reading up on one topic - it is indeed great news.”, he says.
This was certainly true for his own reading as well. Besides his favourites in fiction, John Grisham and Jeffery Archer, he also read a number of other memorable books including the Subprime Attention Crisis, Attention Economy, Indian Icon - A cult called Royal Enfield, No Rules Rule, The Infinite Game, Humour Seriously, Think Again, Toto Chan, Reverse Innovation, Big Ocean Shift, and On Hinduism.
