Business, groceries and shopping, schools and medical care, even driving and exercise – world over, every aspect of how we work and live is now digital. Technology-led disruption has redefined the way enterprises work and changed the skills that the global workforce needs. Machine learning (ML) is much sought after as a career of choice due to the increasing demand across all sectors.

This summer, students have the opportunity to explore machine learning skills with Amazon’s expert scientists at the ML Summer School. This is a three day program where students will get the opportunity to learn key ML techniques such as supervised learning, deep neural networks, probabilistic graphical models, dimensionality reduction, unsupervised learning and sequential models directly from tenured Scientists in Amazon.

Our aim is to prepare students for science roles - this will help to reduce the gap between the growing demand for ML roles across companies and the talent pool with applied ML skills.

The Amazon ML Summer School program launched on June 13, 2021 in India will be an annual occurrence. It is open to pre-final or final year students pursuing a Bachelor’s/Master’s/PhD degree across 20 select Indian campuses. Eligible and interested students will take an online assessment on basic ML concepts and math fundamentals such as probability, statistics and linear algebra. A batch of top students will be selected for ML Summer School, which will take place from 9-11 July. They get to attend a series of virtual classroom sessions over three days, each followed by an interactive Q&A session with experienced scientists at Amazon.

Rajeev Rastogi, VP - India Machine Learning at Amazon says, “With the pace of advancements in ML, we are proactively helping students to learn about the latest trends in the field of ML and apply them to solve real-world problems. As a first step in this extensive science talent development journey, we have started with ML Summer School where we have collaborated with universities to provide hands-on learning experiences to students who are passionate to learn more about ML applications in industry. Our aim is to prepare students for science roles - this will help to reduce the gap between the growing demand for ML roles across companies and the talent pool with applied ML skills.”

The machine learning team at Amazon India is driving innovations that have a profound impact not only on shoppers in India, but also on customers around the world. Models developed by Amazon’s scientists in India have been used globally to improve the quality of Amazon’s catalog by extracting missing attribute values from titles and images, and backfilling them; and ensuring that for all products, images match with the title. Similarly, ML algorithms for improving address quality in India are being leveraged in other marketplaces to identify poor quality addresses and categorize addresses as Residential or Commercial. In addition, including delivery speed as a feature in search ranking — a key factor that helps surface ‘faster’ offers to customers in search results — was first launched in Amazon India.
